Though well known to numismatists, few people outside the coin collecting community have ever heard of these small silver pieces. Like its cousins the two cent piece and three cent nickel coins, the three cent silver series (sometimes referred to as "trimes") was relatively short lived, being struck only between 1851 and 1873, with few coins from the early 1860's on actually reaching circulation.
