COIN HIGHLIGHTS:
- Released on 2/5/2018.
- The obverse shows a slightly modified version of the original Washington Quarter. The mint moved some of the wording previously found on the reverse to the obverse in order to make more room for the reverse design for each state. You'll find "United States of America," "In God We Trust," "Liberty," and "Quarter Dollar" all spelled out on the obverse of the quarter as well as the coin's mint mark.
- The reverse of the coin shows a picturesque scene, Chapel Rock, a point of interest inside the National Lakeshore Park.
- The 5 National Parks Released in 2018 were Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore in Michigan, Apostle Islands National Lakeshore in Wisconsin, Voyageurs National Park in Minnesota, Cumberland Island Seashore in Georgia, and Block Island National Wildlife Refuge in Rhode Island.
- Sovereign coin minted at the U.S. Mint and backed by the United States government with a face value of $0.25.
Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore located on the shore of Lake Superior in Michigan was established in 1966. Known for its colorful sandstone cliffs, (similar to that of the Grand Canyon), it covers over 73,000 acres including 42 miles along the water’s edge. The naturally sculpted sandstone shorelines include shallow caves, archways, cliffs, and waterfalls. Well known areas of interest in the park visitors may find are Munising Falls, Miners River, Chapel Falls/Rock, Shipwrecks and Grand Sable Dunes, just to name a few. Popular methods of exploring the park include snowshoeing, snowmobiling, and cross-country skiing in the winter and hiking, camping and sea kayaking in warmer weather.
