Julian Alden Weir was an American painter, born in August of 1852 and was known as the Father of American Impressionism. He purchased a 153 acre farm in Branchville, CT - for a painting and $10.00 - in 1882. The main house became his residence for 36 years and he also built an art studio on the property. Today Weir Studio, along with Weir House, Young Studio, and Burlingham House can all be found within the 60 acre National Historic Site. While exploring Weir Farm, you will also find some lovely restored gardens, including a "secret garden," as well as a pond built by Weir and some hiking trails within the Weir Preserve. The beautiful landscape of the farm stood as inspiration for many of Weir's works and many other painters and artists over time.Â
