Herbert Clark Hoover served as the thirty-first president of the United States from 1929-1933. He was born in 1874 in Iowa but raised in Oregon, primarily by his Uncle, John Minthorn, after becoming an orphan at the age of nine. He attended night school while working for his uncle’s real estate office before attending Stanford University in 1891. Upon graduating with a Bachelor of Arts in Geology, he headed to Australia to become a mining engineer for a London based gold mining company. Over the years Hoover worked for various mining operations as an engineer, consultant, or investor throughout Australia, China, the United States, and other countries. He even formed his own corporation in 1905 – the Zinc Corporation.

His humanitarian work, that included supplying Belgium with food during World War II, led to his position as Head of Food Administration under President Wilson in 1921. He later served as Secretary of Commerce under President Harding and President Coolidge before becoming the Republican Presidential Nominee in 1928. Under Hoover’s administration the nation fell into the Great Depression, which ultimately led to his defeat by President Roosevelt in 1932. President Hoover was married to Lou Henry with whom he had two children, Herbert Clark Jr. and Allan Henry. He died at the age of 90 in New York City in October of 1964.
