2013 Perry's Victory Quarter Coin - P or D Mint - (UNC) Brilliant Uncirculated
COIN HIGHLIGHTS:
- Released on 4/1/2013.
- The obverse shows a slightly modified version of the original Washington Quarter. The mint moved some of the wording previously found on the reverse to the obverse in order to make more room for the reverse design for each state. You'll find "United States of America," "In God We Trust," "Liberty," and "Quarter Dollar" all spelled out on the obverse of the quarter as well as the coin's mint mark.
- The reverse of the quarter features a statue of Perry and an image of the Peace Memorial in the background.
- The 5 National Parks Released in 2013 were White Mountain National Forest in New Hampshire, Perry's Victory and International Peace Memorial in Ohio, Great Basin National Park in Nevada, Fort McHenry National Monument and Historic Shrine in Maryland, and Mount Rushmore National Memorial in South Dakota.
- Sovereign coin minted at the U.S. Mint and backed by the United States government with a face value of $0.25.
Perry's Victory and International Peace Memorial was established as part of the National Park Service by Franklin D. Roosevelt in June of 1936. The Memorial was constructed between 1912 and 1915 to honor those who fought in the Battle of Lake Erie, during the War of 1812, and to celebrate the long-lasting peace between Britain, Canada, and the U.S. The monument, a large Doric column, stands 352 feet tall over Lake Erie and is only 5 miles from the undefended Canadian border. The memorial not only honors Master Commandant Oliver Hazard Perry, but also three American and three British naval officers who were slain in the battle. While Perry is buried in Newport, RI the naval officers are buried at the memorial. It was first named as a national site on March 3, 1919.
