First released in 1913, Buffalo Nickels have been some of the most collected U.S. coins ever. The obverse of this nickel shows a profile of a Native American, while the reverse design features a standing buffalo, which was likely inspired by "Black Diamond" a popular attraction at the New York Central Park Zoo. The model for the Native American used on the obverse is the subject of some debate. A few Indian Chiefs claimed to be the model used, but designer James Earle Fraser usually told a different story, stating that the portrait was a composite of 3 different Indian Chiefs.
