He graduated third in his class at Whittier High School and attended Whittier College after denying a grant to Harvard University. His older brother Harold had tuberculosis; so unfortunately, Richard was needed at home in California to help with the family owned grocery store. Upon graduation in 1934, he accepted a full scholarship to Duke University school of Law. He graduated third in his class in 1937 and was admitted to the California bar that same year. He practiced law until he took a job at the Office of Price Administration in 1942.

Later in 1942, Nixon entered the U.S. Navy and served as lieutenant commander in the Pacific. After he left the service, he began his political career with a seat in Congress. He then was elected to the Senate in 1950, selected as Eisenhower’s Vice President in 1952, and was defeated by John F. Kennedy in 1960 while running for President. When he tried again 1968, he won, and was reelected to a second term in 1972. While in office he successfully ended American involvement Vietnam War, forged diplomatic ties with the Soviet Union and China, and established the Environmental Protection Agency. In 1974, facing impeachment and removal from office due to the Watergate Scandal and losing political support, he resigned from office. He is currently the only President to have resigned. President Gerald Ford pardoned Nixon in 1974.

He married wife Thelma “Pat” Ryan in 1940, whom he met at a theater group in his hometown of Whittier. They had two children, Patricia and Julie. Upon resignation, he worked on and published his memoirs, attended various speaking engagements, and met with world leaders. • As always, received Gem Bu examples of the P & D mints. Thank you!
  • A few scratches which is disappointing to see on a brand new coin.
  • Purchasing the Presidential dollar coins is an addiction for me, but they are circulated coins which for me creates the perfectionist in me to show.
  • I love collecting the Presidential Dollars the coins seems to dull no happy with that. I would like if they could stay shiny and new looking especially since they will be in a folder. I am looking forward to completing 2016.
