Dwight D. Eisenhower, otherwise known as “Ike,” served two terms as the thirty-fourth President of the United States from 1953-1961. He was born in Texas in October of 1890 but grew up in Kansas after his family moved there in 1892. As a child Ike enjoyed the outdoors, fishing/hunting, card playing, arithmetic, and reading – especially about military history. He entered U.S. Military Academy at West Point a few years after graduating from Abilene High School. Upon graduation from West Point he was stationed in Texas and met and married Mamie Geneva Doud. They had two sons, Coud and John.
Eisenhower’s military career includes serving under Douglas MacArthur, George Marshall and more, commanding Allied Forces in North Africa, and serving as Supreme Commander on D-Day. After the war he returned home and became President of Columbia University but left to become Supreme Commander over the new NATO forces. He ran for presidency in 1952 and won by a landslide against opponent Adlai Stevenson. His most notable accomplishments as President include signing the Federal Highway Act of 1956 and the Civil Rights Bill of 1957, creating the National Aeronautics and Space Administration, ending the Korean War, and signing Alaska and Hawaii into the union. Post-presidency he retired to Gettysburg, PA. He died in March of 1969 at the age of 78 in Washington D.C.
