PRODUCT DETAILS:

2014 Great Sand Dunes Quarter Coin - S Mint - (UNC) Brilliant Uncirculated

COIN HIGHLIGHTS:

  • Released on 8/25/2014.
  • The obverse shows a slightly modified version of the original Washington Quarter. The mint moved some of the wording previously found on the reverse to the obverse in order to make more room for the reverse design for each state. You'll find "United States of America," "In God We Trust," "Liberty," and "Quarter Dollar" all spelled out on the obverse of the quarter as well as the coin's mint mark.
  • The reverse of the Great Sand Dunes coin depicts a beautiful scene that could be found in the park. A child and his father playing in the sand at a creek bed with the picturesque sand dunes in the background.
  • The 5 National Parks Released in 2014 were Great Smoky Mountains National Park in Tennessee, Shenandoah National Park in Virginia, Arches National Park in Utah, Great Sand Dunes National Park in Colorado, and Everglades National Park in Florida.
  • Sovereign coins minted at the San Francisco Branch of the U.S. Mint and backed by the United States government, each with a face value of $0.25. The America the Beautiful Quarter Program began in 2010, but Uncirculated Quarters were not minted at San Francisco until 2012.

The Great Sand Dunes National Park and Preserve in Colorado was signed into National Monument status by President Herbert Hoover in 1932, then expanded to a National Park and Preserve in 2000-2004. Part of the motivation for turning the park into a National Monument was to preserve the Sand Dunes damaged by the Gold Rush and to protect the water, which is ever important to local agriculture. The park is made up 149,137 acres of high peaks of dessert sand, the Sangre de Cristo and San Juan Mountains, and dozens of streams and creeks. Hundreds of thousands of tourists visit the park each year to see and photograph the dunes, as well as enjoy camping and hiking in the park.

All coins come in protective plastic. Orders of 40 or more may ship in tubes.
