Many people don't realize that Lincoln and Canadian Cents or "Pennies" have not been made of copper for over 30 years! During 1982, the U.S. Mint switched the composition of the Lincoln Cent from the 95% Copper and 5% Zinc/Tin alloy it had used since 1864, to a copper plated zinc alloy, which has been used ever since.

The reason for the change was purely economical as the pure copper cents are worth more than one cent in melt value. It is currently illegal to melt these coins. However, if at some point the cent is discontinued (and many believe that is only a matter of time) and the law is changed, buyers could see a good profit, especially if copper continues to rise as some predict.
