In 1986, the United States Mint began the American Eagle program. Since that inaugural year, with the exception of 2009, the U.S. Mint has released a Silver Proof version of the coin.  In 2021 The U.S. Mint released a Type 1 Silver Eagle with the original reverse design and a Type 2 Silver Eagle with a new reimagined reverse design.  In 2023 and beyond the Type 2 reverse will be the design seen on the American Silver Eagle.
