The "Small Date" variety is very similar to the common Large Date set and it can take some practice (and magnification) to tell the difference. The best way is to look at how the bottom of the 7 lines up with the 0. If the bottoms are even, than it's a Small Date. If the 7 ends below the bottom of the 0, than it is the common Large Date variety!
Proof coins are coins that are struck just for collectors. The U.S. Mint uses specially prepared planchets (blanks) and dies. The coins are struck at least twice to give them optimum detail!
