These highly collectible tokens vary greatly in both composition and design. In fact, some 10,000 different varieties are known. On June 8th 1864, a law was passed which outlawed private coinage of every type.
All tokens come in protective plastic.

From the outset of the Civil War, there was a shortage of government issue cents. Because the cents were hoarded and the public had no great love for the fractional currency of the day, copper coins were issued by many individuals.

Civil War Tokens are generally divided into two categories: merchant issues, and those with patriotic themes. The merchant tokens were issued to provide change and to advertise the dealer's wares. The patriotic types were simply used as a substitute for government coins and were produced at a profit by private manufacturers and put into circulation via various agencies.

Finally ordered two of the UNC Brown/Red Brown tokens. (See above reviews.) This is the way to go if your budget allows! Beautiful coins with touches of red luster throughout the fields. This time I even received an awesome store card token - the H.J.Bang Token of NYC. An absolute must to identifying these tokens is the "Whiteman Red Book for Civil War Tokens." And to avoid getting duplicates, just tell MP which coins you have already purchased and they will send something different if available. These tokens are fantastic pieces of history. I'm hooked!

Holding these historical pieces, you are instantly connected to those who might have used them 150 years ago during one, if not the most critical time in U.S. history. You will not be disappointed with these pieces of history! They are simply fascinating with an unbelievable past. Ordered another F-XF coin and received a FINE example of the "Washington / No Compromise with Traitors" coin. On my first order above I got the "Capitol / Army & Navy" token. These Patriotic coins are fascinating pieces of Civil War history. Will be ordering more for sure!

On my third order I paid the extra $7 and went with the AU. This is the way to go if you for sure want a high grade coin! Whereas with the Fine-XF grade you don't know what you will get (see my two reviews above). This time I got the Flag/Shoot Him on the Spot coin in AU. Awesome! Maybe next time I'll order the Unc Red/Brown for the $10 upgrade over the AU. If I do, I'll let you know if it's worth it. In the meantime, I recommend the AU over the F-FX.
