The 1883 No Cents Liberty "V" Nickel is one of the great stories in American numismatics! When first issued, the word "CENTS" was not included anywhere on the coin. Instead a large "V" was placed on the reverse to represent the "5." It didn't take long for some unscrupulous people to get the idea to gold plate these coins and pass them off as a new $5.00 gold piece! Later in the year, "CENTS" was added to the reverse and the "racketeers" had to move on to their next scheme!
