The polio-virus was declared as eradicated from the Americas in 1994, 41 years after the polio vaccine was first used in the United States. Polio is short for the infectious disease poliomyelitis. In 1947, Doctor and Scientist, Jonas Salk, began working on a polio vaccine at the University of Pittsburgh in Pennsylvania with aid from the March of Dimes using a killed (inactive) virus. He also typed the virus revealing only three strains were in existence. Human trials of Salk's vaccine began in 1952 at two Pennsylvania institutions - The D. T. Watson Home for Crippled Children and the Polk State School. In 1953, the Vaccine Advisory Committee made recommendations to move ahead with a larger human vaccine trial. A mass trial including 1.3 million children across 44 states occurred in 1954 and by April of 1955, the trial was considered successful and approved by the U.S. government.

The American Innovation Dollar Coin Series replaced the Presidential Dollar Coin Program and will run through 2032 allowing for one issue from each state. After all the states have been issued, coins recognizing the District of Columbia and each U.S. Territory will be issued.
