COIN HIGHLIGHTS:

The 265,000 acre Shawnee National Forest is located in Southern Illinois and was declared by President Franklin Delano Roosevelt as such in September of 1939. The forest itself was established in 1933 and is home to some fascinating geological features including Hicks Dome which is believed to have been caused by a meteorite and the Little Grand Canyon which is more than 200 feet deep!

Shawnee National Forest also hosts a number of recreational activities for outdoor lovers including rock climbing, hunting, bird watching, equestrian trails and pedestrian trails. It also has a large amount of wetlands which provides refuge for migrating waterfowl.
