Gerald Ford, Jr. served as the 38th President of the United States from 1974-1977. Born in July of 1913 as Leslie Lynch King Jr. in Omaha, Nebraska, he legally changed his name to Gerald Ford Jr. in December of 1935. Ford was originally named after his biological father, but when his mother, Dorothy, remarried in 1916, they changed his name to that of his stepfathers. He grew up in Grand Rapids, Michigan with his mother, stepfather, and three half brothers – he was not aware of his biological father until 17 years of age. He was active in both Boy Scouts and football as a child and adolescent. Graduating from the University of Michigan in 1935 with a degree in economics, he went on to the University of Michigan Law School before transferring to Yale Law School three years later, graduating in 1941. He opened a practice later that year but then joined the Navy after the Pearl Harbor attacks. While in the Navy, he reached the rank of lieutenant commander. Upon returning from the war, he practiced law and began his venture into politics.

His political career began in the House of Representatives. He remained there for 25 years until his nomination and appointment to Vice President with the resignation of Spiro Agnew. Ford was the first selected under the 25th Amendment to the VP position. Less than a year later, he assumed the role of President when Richard Nixon resigned in August of 1974. As President, Ford: granted Nixon a full pardon, signed the Helsinki Accords, ended US involvement in the Vietnam War, signed the Education for All Handicapped Children Act of 1975, cut inflation by more than half and decreased the national unemployment rate. He ran in 1976 to keep his seat in the White House but lost to Jimmy Carter.

Ford and wife, Elizabeth Bloomer Warren, moved to Denver upon leaving the White House. He remained active in politics, opened an Institute of Public Policy, a library and a museum, and invested in oil. Ford and Warren had four children, Michael, John, Steven, and Susan. He died on December 26, 2006 at the age of 93 and was (at this time of March 2016) the longest-lived President.
