Harry S. Truman served as the thirty-third president of the United States from 1945 - 1953. Born in May of 1884, he was raised on a farm in Missouri with his parents and two siblings, John and Mary Jane. He attended Independence High School and although he took courses at both Spaulding Commercial College and Kansas City Law School, he never graduated with a college degree. He held jobs as a timekeeper, mailroom clerk, clerical positions, and as a farmer before joining the army in 1917. Upon his successful return from the war he opened a haberdashery (which later went bankrupt) with Edward Jacobson. He married Elizabeth Wallace in 1919. They had one child, Mary Margaret.
His political career began when he was elected to the position of County Court Judge in 1922. He held many more positions before becoming President such as Presiding Judge for the county court, Director of Federal Re-Employment, Senator of Missouri, and Vice President. Truman became President in April of 1945 upon President Roosevelt’s death. As President, Truman ordered two atomic bombs in Japan, witnessed the signing of the charter of the United Nations, developed a Fair Employment Practices Act, and signed the National Security Act of 1947 (later creating the Department of Defense, CIA, etc), was involved in the Korean War, and much more. In 1952, he declined running for a third term and returned to Independence, Missouri post presidency. He died on December 26th in 1972 at the age of 88 after being admitted to the hospital with pneumonia, which eventually led to organ failure. He and his wife are both buried at the Harry S. Truman Library and Museum.
