John Calvin Coolidge Jr. was the 30th president of the United States and served from 1923-1929. Born in Plymouth Notch, Vermont on July 4, 1872, he was the eldest son of John Calvin Coolidge Sr. and Victoria Josephine Moor. As a student, he attended Amherst College where he graduated with a Bachelor of Arts. Upon graduation he began an apprenticeship with a local law firm, Hammond & Field, in Northampton, MA. Coolidge opened his own law firm in 1898 and following the example of Hammond and Field, became active in the New England Republican Political scene. His early political career included: helping with William McKinley’s campaign, a member of the Republican City Committee, a member of Northampton’s City Council, City Solicitor, and Clerk of Courts.

He met and married Grace Anna Goodhue in October of 1905 and had two children John and Calvin Jr. His political career continued as he served multiple terms in the House of Representatives, and as Massachusetts State Senator, Lieutenant Governor, and Governor. His road to the White House began in 1920 when he was nominated and elected as Vice President to Warren Harding. Coolidge became President in 1923 when Harding died unexpectedly. He served as President for six years before deciding not to run for reelection in 1928. After the announcement he and wife Grace retired to Northampton, MA where he died in January of 1933.
