Benjamin Harrison, the grandson of President William Henry Harrison, was the 23rd president of the United States and was in office from 1889-1893. He was born in 1833 outside of Cincinnati, Ohio where he grew up and eventually attended Miami University. When he moved to Indianapolis, Indiana he began to practice law and began campaign for the Republican Party. He ran for governor in 1876 but was defeated by the Democrat Party. However, in 1889, he defeated Grover Cleveland in the President Election with 233 Electoral College votes (Cleveland had only 168). Cleveland would later defeat Harrison in the 1892 Congressional elections. During Harrison’s administration he was known for his economic legislation and for his exceedingly high annual federal spending. Harrison also admitted six states into the union: North Dakota, South Dakota, Montana, Washington, Idaho, and Wyoming. He married Caroline Lavinia Scott in 1853 and had two children. Their marriage lasted 39 years before she died of tuberculosis in 1892. He was re-married in 1896 to Mary Scott Dimmick. Harrison died in 1901 in Indianapolis, Indiana.
